The year was 1982 and it was filled with events that made landmarks in mankind’s history. Worldwide it was the year remembered for the ‘El Nino’ phenomenon which caused droughts and major environmental changes globally. Nuclear testing was also done rampantly by different countries of power. On a more positive note, it was the year when Pope John Paul II made history by being the first pope to visit the Great Britain and Spain. The movie, “E.T. The Extraterrestrial” was released and became the highest grossing movie while Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller’ becoming the best selling album of all time. That year, Time Magazine named the computer as man of the year.
1982 was also an important year for the Philippines. The country was ranked 10th in the Asian Games and it played host to the 13th Asean Economic Ministers meeting. Ferdinand Marcos was then the Prime Minister under the martial law and his message to the neighboring countries was ‘Asean Free Trade’.
Due to the martial law rule, this was also a time when people were starting to get restless. They wanted change in the government especially in the leadership. There was an underground movement to oust the president. They wanted new ideas and they wanted a new leader.
This same feeling was felt by Siy Tun towards the organization in which he was a member. He felt that there was something more he could do. He wanted to impart genuine generosity with nobility and simplicity - he wanted to make a difference! Compelled by his inner calling, he consulted higher members of the organization. With the help of fellow Lions Mike Tan, Lorenzo Eng Chong, Felipe Santos, Vicente Josefa and Oscar Cuanco Chua slowly his visions came into reality.
Fatefully it was in March 1982, when the Manila Allied Lions Club District 301-A1 was chartered. The name Allied was taken from the name of a bank. It also means unity. Siy Tun became its first president succeeded by Lions Feliciano Co, Antonio Gaw , Mariano Madera, Antonio Dy Hui Hong, Fernando Castaneda, Eusebio Monzon, Morrys Ang, Victor Sy Chua, Sy Tiac See, Bonifacio Sy, Lolita Sy, Anton Ong Hua, Jimmy Tiu, Valentin Co and John Siy.
